Rates are levied each year for the period 1 July to 30 June.
The Local Government Act 1993 prescribes the following due dates each year:
- 1st Instalment - 31 August
- 2nd Instalment - 30 November
- 3rd Instalment - 28 February
- 4th Instalment - 31 May
Payment of Rates and Charges in Full: If you wish to pay the total amount due in full, payment should be made on or before the first instalment due date (31 August).
Payment of Rates and Charges by Quarterly Instalments: Rates may be paid by quarterly instalments in accordance with Section 562 of the Local Government Act 1993. If an instalment is unpaid by its due date, daily interest charges will accrue immediately on that instalment. Instalment reminder notices will be sent to those ratepayers who choose to pay by instalment.
Interest Charges: Interest is payable on all overdue rates and accounts. Council has fixed the level of interest on overdue accounts at 7% per annum. Accounts become overdue if not paid by the due date.
Hardship: In cases of hardship, alternative arrangements for payment may be arranged by contacting Council's Director of Corporate Services on 6965 1900.
Sale of Land for Unpaid Rates and Charges: Councils have the power under Section 713 of the Local Government Act 1993 to sell any land on which rates are not paid. They usually cannot do this until the rates are five (5) years overdue. If the land is vacant, it can be sold after one (1) year in certain circumstances. However, make sure you contact the Council before it gets to this stage. There may be ways to solve the problem that will satisfy both you and Council.
Proceedings will be taken for the recovery of any amount overdue as approved in the Local Government Act 1993. Therefore, please pay promptly.
